This award recognizes the scientific excellence and innovation of Helwan University’s Faculty of Science, empowering undergraduate researchers to pioneer new frontiers in biological and computational sciences.
2. Student Capacity & Scale of Impact
The 2026 grant provides comprehensive training and experimental support for undergraduate researchers at Helwan University:
- Awarded Research Teams: Full capacity support for participating graduation project teams across Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences.
- Participating Cohort: Capacity building and practical support for undergraduate students across the 3-year grant term (2026–2029).
3. Dual-Phase Capacity Building Framework
Participating student teams will undertake a specialized research journey governed by the UKABCS Dual-Phase Framework:
Phase I: Capacity Building & Computational Training
- Full Platform Access: Provision of credentials to UKABCS digital tools, software pipelines, and bio-databases.
- Specialized Training: Advanced coursework in Computational Biology, Structural Modeling, Virtual Screening, and AI in Life Sciences.
Phase II: Project Execution & Experimental Validation
- Wet-Lab Validation: Practical experimental support to validate computational predictions within university laboratories.
- Publication Mentorship: Academic guidance for drafting, refining, and publishing research papers in peer-reviewed international journals.
4. Enhanced Experimental Support & Chemical Cash Fund
To support practical laboratory synthesis and testing, UKABCS has introduced an enhanced experimental funding track:
- Annual Chemical & Reagents Allocation: A dedicated cash funding enhancement of £3,000 GBP per year allocated exclusively for purchasing approved Kits & Reagents and laboratory consumables for winning project teams.
- Total Experimental Funding: Reaches £9,000 GBP across the 3-year grant cycle.
- Direct Supplier Disbursement: Procurement payments are disbursed directly by UKABCS to verified chemical suppliers via Lab Chem Flow.
5. Main PI Leadership & Governance
The designated Main Principal Investigator (Main PI) at Helwan University’s Faculty of Science leads the awarded grant. Under Clause 10.1 of the agreement, responsibilities include:
- Scientific Review & Specification Approval: Evaluating and scientifically approving technical specifications for Kits & Reagents submitted by research teams.
- Digital Management via Lab Chem Flow: Overseeing procurement requests, inventory checks, and chemical dispensing through Lab Chem Flow.
- Resource Consolidation: Managing shared chemical utilization among research teams to maximize research efficiency.
- Reporting & Publication Governance: Submitting Quarterly Progress Reports and Annual Institutional Reports to UKABCS while maintaining institutional attribution for Helwan University and UKABCS.
