In an atmosphere filled with pride and celebration of academic excellence, the UK Organisation for Biotechnology and Computational Science (UKABCS) extends its warmest congratulations to Cairo University — Faculty of Science (Biotechnology Department) on their competitive selection and winning of the UKABCS Graduation Project Capacity Building & Enhanced Experimental Support Grant 2026.

This scientific award follows a rigorous peer-review evaluation of Cairo University’s Biotechnology research proposals, reaffirming the institution’s pioneering role as a beacon of scientific research, innovation, and academic distinction across Egypt and the MENA region.

2. Student Capacity & Scale of Impact

The 2026 grant empowers Cairo University to extend comprehensive support to a large cohort of emerging researchers and undergraduate pioneers. The approved capacity includes:

  • Awarded Research Teams: Full capacity support for 20 Graduation Project Teams per year.
  • Participating Student Cohort: 10 students per research team, providing direct capacity building and experimental training to 200 undergraduate students annually.
  • Total Beneficiaries: Over the 3-year grant cycle (2026–2029), the program will empower 600 young scientists.

3. Dual-Phase Capacity Building Framework

Participating student teams at Cairo University will embark on a structured scientific journey governed by the UKABCS Dual-Phase Framework, ensuring academic rigor and international publishing readiness:

Phase I: Capacity Building & Computational Training

UKABCS equips all awarded teams with state-of-the-art computational infrastructure and digital platforms:

  • Full Platform Access: Complete credentials to UKABCS digital suites, software pipelines, and bio-databases.
  • Specialized Training Modules: Intensive training in Computational Biology, Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD), Structural Molecular Modeling, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in biological data analytics.

Phase II: Project Execution & Experimental Validation

This phase bridges computational modeling with practical wet-lab experimentation:

  • Wet-Lab Validation: Direct experimental support to validate computational predictions within university laboratories.
  • Publication Guidance: Academic mentorship for drafting, refining, and submitting high-impact research papers to peer-reviewed international journals.

4. Enhanced Experimental Support & Chemical Cash Fund

To overcome laboratory supply bottlenecks and support practical experimental execution, UKABCS has introduced an enhanced experimental funding track:

  • Annual Chemical & Reagents Allocation: A dedicated cash funding enhancement of £3,000 GBP per year allocated exclusively for the procurement of approved Kits & Reagents and laboratory consumables for the 20 participating project teams.
  • Total Experimental Funding: Over the 3-year grant cycle, direct chemical and reagent support reaches £9,000 GBP.
  • Direct Supplier Disbursement: Procurement payments are disbursed directly by UKABCS to verified chemical suppliers via the Lab Chem Flow platform, ensuring maximum cost-efficiency, transparency, and hassle-free laboratory delivery.

5. Main PI Leadership (Dr. Nourhan Hassan) & Governance

Dr. Nourhan Hassan (Assistant Professor, Biotechnology Department, Cairo University) serves as the designated Main Principal Investigator (Main PI) for the awarded grant. Under Clause 10.1 of the executed agreement, her scientific leadership encompasses:

  • Scientific Review & Specification Approval: Evaluating and scientifically approving the specifications and required test quantities for Kits & Reagents submitted by team supervisors.
  • Digital Management via Lab Chem Flow: Overseeing procurement requests, inventory checks, and chemical dispensing through the official Lab Chem Flow digital platform.
  • Resource Consolidation & Shared Utilization: Consolidating common chemical requirements across the 20 teams to optimize budget efficiency and enable shared reagent use.
  • Progress Reporting & Publication Governance: Submitting Quarterly Progress Reports and Annual Institutional Reports to UKABCS while maintaining institutional attribution for Cairo University and UKABCS.

6. Welcome to the UKABCS Family!
