This award highlights the outstanding dedication of Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Science in Assiut towards advancing scientific research, empowering talented students across Upper Egypt, and integrating modern bio-computational methodologies.
2. Student Capacity & Scale of Impact
The 2026 grant provides comprehensive academic and practical support for undergraduate researchers in Upper Egypt:
- Awarded Research Teams: Full capacity support for participating graduation project teams at the Faculty of Science in Assiut.
- Participating Cohort: Training and experimental support for undergraduate students across the 3-year grant term (2026–2029).
- Scientific Focus: Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Computational Modeling.
3. Dual-Phase Capacity Building Framework
Participating student teams will undergo a rigorous scientific journey governed by the UKABCS Dual-Phase Framework:
Phase I: Capacity Building & Computational Training
- Full Platform Access: Provision of credentials to UKABCS digital tools, software pipelines, and databases.
- Specialized Training: Advanced coursework in Computational Biology, Protein Structural Modeling, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Life Sciences.
Phase II: Project Execution & Experimental Validation
- Wet-Lab Validation: Practical experimental support to validate computational predictions in university laboratories.
- Publication Mentorship: Guidance for drafting, refining, and submitting high-impact research papers to peer-reviewed international journals.
4. Enhanced Experimental Support & Chemical Cash Fund
To overcome laboratory material constraints, UKABCS has introduced an enhanced experimental funding track:
- Annual Chemical & Reagents Allocation: A dedicated cash funding enhancement of £3,000 GBP per year allocated exclusively for purchasing approved Kits & Reagents and laboratory consumables for winning project teams.
- Total Experimental Funding: Reaches £9,000 GBP across the 3-year grant cycle.
- Direct Supplier Disbursement: Procurement costs are paid directly by UKABCS to verified chemical vendors via the Lab Chem Flow platform, ensuring hassle-free laboratory delivery.
5. Main PI Leadership (Prof. Ahmed Salem M. Solieman) & Governance
Prof. Ahmed Salem M. Solieman serves as the designated Main Principal Investigator (Main PI) for the awarded grant. Under Clause 10.1 of the agreement, his responsibilities include:
- Scientific Review & Specification Approval: Scientifically reviewing and approving required Kits & Reagents submitted by research supervisors.
- Digital Management via Lab Chem Flow: Managing procurement requests, inventory checks, and chemical dispensing through the official Lab Chem Flow digital platform.
- Resource Consolidation: Organizing shared chemical utilization among project teams to maximize research and budget efficiency.
- Reporting & Publication Governance: Submitting Quarterly Progress Reports and Annual Institutional Reports to UKABCS while maintaining institutional attribution.
